Supporting Higher Education Development in Colombia
Towards Engaged Universities in Colombia
August has been a month to strengthen ties with Colombian higher education. ACEEU had an influential participation in the 2023 University Management Conference (SUE), held in Santa Marta on 16-18 August, by gathering leaders and managers of the 32 public universities in Colombia. With a plenary session called “Innovation and Inclusion in university management towards an engaged university”, ACEEU Chair Prof Dr Thorsten Kliewe identified eight most common misconceptions in higher education preventing leaders from fostering an entrepreneurial and engaged spirit. The main take-home message is the needed mindset shit needed to overcome those misconceptions.
Additionally, during the workshop “Designing entrepreneurial and engagement practices towards sustainability in universities ” that took place on August 22, 2023, in Bogota, Colombia, Prof Kliewe shared his views and best practices and used the ACEEU framework to identify challenges and solutions for university management to achieve sustainability through entrepreneurship. The workshop brought together university leaders, managers and academics from 9 universities, dedicated to driving innovation, engagement, and sustainability.

ACEEU PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
ACEEU fostering innovation and engagement
Mentoring, engagement & upskilling
By fostering connections between the arts, local stakeholders, entrepreneurship actors, and authorities, ACEEU has paved the way for sustainable rural progress. Through the "RURAL CANVAS" project, ACEEU, together with project partners successfully designed tools to equip artists and creative professionals with entrepreneurial skills. "Next Door," another meaningful ACEEU project is aimed at strengthening community engagement. Through local co-creation workshops and a digital resource mapping tool, the project enabled a more interconnected network of support for the elderly, elevating awareness about the vital role of community social capital. The "Mentor Your Future" initiative by ACEEU has significantly impacted higher education institutions across Europe by developing a common methodology for student mentoring, to empower young learners to navigate educational pathways with confidence. This approach not only enhances employability but also fosters social cohesion and inclusivity.

ACEEU PROJECTS
ACEEU fosters achieving the SDGs in HE
SDGs meet higher education
It is easy to feel discouraged by how much work is left to achieve the United Nations' 17 SDGs) with targets ranging from climate action to quality education. However, ACEEU’s innovative approach of "what works" comes to life by implementing two European-funded projects on sustainability: Circular Loops and DECODE Project.
The Circular Loops project focused on social enterprises, which employ 19.1 million people in Europe alone, by developing an Integrative Learning Programme (https://circularloops-empowering.talentlms.com/discussion/index/) designed for social enterprise managers to manage the transition towards more sustainable business models.
On the other hand, the DECODE project addressed the multiple challenges academics face in embedding sustainability in the education and research portfolios by establishing the first European Deans Council for Sustainability with 198 council members. Moreover, some 20 deans from about six countries were invited to develop their departmental impact roadmap by using the DECODE toolbox (https://connect.decode-council.org/membersarea/index).
