University of Szeged Becomes Hungary’s First ACEEU-Accredited Engaged University

The Accreditation Council for Entrepreneurial and Engaged Universities (ACEEU) has awarded the University of Szeged the Engaged University accreditation, making it the first institution in Hungary to achieve this recognition for its commitment to engagement.

As one of Hungary’s largest higher education institutions, the University of Szeged (USZ) boasts 12 faculties, a student body of 25,000 (20% of whom are international), and a workforce of over 9,000, including 2,800 lecturers and researchers. USZ is not only a leading academic and research institution but also a crucial hub for the Southern Great Plain region, contributing significantly to regional health standards, economic development, and cultural life through its extensive international collaborations.

Prof. László Rovó, Rector of the University of Szeged, expressed pride in this achievement, stating: "The University of Szeged is an engaged institution, aiming to shape the social, economic, and cultural life of the region through education, R&D&I, third mission activities, social responsibility, sustainable development, and medical care. The successful ACEEU Engaged University accreditation is a testament to our efforts and international recognition of our impact. It’s an achievement we are deeply proud of."

ACEEU evaluators commended USZ for its strong third mission activities, particularly in healthcare and public access to its facilities. Notable examples include free dental examinations and discounted treatments for the people of Szeged, as well as patient care services offered by Mediversal Ltd. The university’s cultural centers also provide free courses and events, while public access is granted to key facilities such as the university library, botanical garden, observatory, and sports infrastructure.

Overall, USZ stands out for offering a wide range of services to the community, with a strong focus on healthcare and open access to knowledge and resources.

The University of Szeged underwent a rigorous four-phase accreditation process, including self-evaluation and a peer review visit, before being awarded Engaged University status by ACEEU.
