Understanding the status quo of socially engaged research (SER), is a key step in setting the stage for the future of research, one of the goals of the BETTER Life project.
The Status Quo is presented in this Report (see link below), and it starts by defining socially engaged research as a strategic, collaborative approach where academic institutions work closely with diverse societal stakeholders to tackle pressing societal challenges.
On a policy level, socially engaged research is being actively promoted as a tool for enhancing innovation and addressing ecosystem needs. International platforms, funding programs, and policy frameworks have been put in place to foster SER, empowering institutions to contribute meaningfully to fields such as healthcare, the environment, public policy, and the economy. Higher education institutions are implementing support units like science shops, labs, and competitive funding schemes to drive engagement.
The report also highlights the role of citizens and marginalized groups in research. Institutions must develop strategies to engage these stakeholders throughout the research process, ensuring research is inclusive, accessible, and impactful. By nurturing mutual trust and fostering collaboration, socially engaged research has the power to address complex problems and generate long-term societal benefits.
The Status Quo Report, under the leadership of ACEEU, sets a strong foundation for BETTER Life to become a transformative force, driving innovation and collaboration across Europe to tackle societal challenges in life sciences.
